The Rarest Unicode Characters You've Probably Never Seen

Every fancy text generator on this site — including all 24 tools here — draws from a tiny corner of Unicode: a few hundred characters out of a standard that, as of version 17.0, defines 159,801 characters across 172 scripts. Most of what’s in there has nothing to do with styling an Instagram bio. Some of it is 4,000 years old. Some of it exists purely because a typographer in 1962 thought the English language was missing a punctuation mark. Here’s a tour of the parts of Unicode that never come up in a font generator.

Unicode Is Much Bigger Than You Think

When Unicode 1.0 shipped in 1991, it covered 23 scripts. Unicode 17.0, finalized in September 2025, covers 172 — an average of roughly six new scripts added with every release since. The current version added four in one go: Beria Erfe and Tolong Siki (modern scripts used by living communities in central Africa and northeast India), Tai Yo (a traditional script from northern Vietnam), and Sidetic, a historic script from ancient Anatolia that hadn’t been digitally encoded until now.

Put plainly: somewhere in the world, a community was still waiting, as recently as 2025, for their traditional writing system to be usable in a text message. That’s most of what Unicode actually is — not fancy fonts, but the slow, ongoing project of making every human writing system typeable.

You Can Type in Egyptian Hieroglyphs

Unicode’s Egyptian Hieroglyphs block (U+13000 to U+1342F) contains 1,072 individual hieroglyphic characters, organized using Gardiner’s sign list — the standard reference categorization Egyptologists have used for a century. This isn’t a font pretending to look like hieroglyphs; these are the actual encoded symbols, meaning a sufficiently motivated person could, technically, write a genuine sentence in Middle Egyptian using nothing but a standard keyboard input method and a font that supports the block.

Almost nobody does, of course — hieroglyphic Unicode support exists mainly for Egyptology researchers, digital humanities projects, and museums building interactive displays, not casual typing. But it’s a genuine illustration of Unicode’s actual ambition: not “cover the internet’s needs,” but “make every recorded human writing system representable in digital text,” including ones that stopped being used for ordinary communication before the Roman Empire existed. The Longest Character Name in the Standard

Every Unicode character has an official name, and most are mercifully short — LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A, DOLLAR SIGN, and so on. Somewhere at the other extreme sits ARABIC LIGATURE UIGHUR KIRGHIZ YEH WITH HAMZA ABOVE WITH ALEF MAKSURA ISOLATED FORM — 83 characters long, describing one single glyph used in Arabic-script text for Uyghur and Kyrgyz. It exists because Arabic ligature encoding has to account for extremely specific combinations of base letters, diacritics, and positional forms (isolated, initial, medial, final), and this particular combination happened to need every part of that description to be unambiguous.

At the opposite end, several official Unicode names run to just two or three letters — proof that the naming committee wasn’t attached to consistency in length, only to precision. When a character needs 83 characters of description to be unambiguous, it gets 83; when it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

The Punctuation Mark Invented on Purpose

Most punctuation evolved gradually over centuries. The interrobang (‽, U+203D) didn’t — it was deliberately invented in 1962 by advertising executive Martin K. Speckter, who noticed that copywriters were stacking “?!” together to punctuate excited rhetorical questions and figured the combination deserved its own single glyph. It briefly appeared on real typewriter keys in the 1960s, fell out of mainstream use, and now survives mainly as a Unicode character and a piece of typography trivia — a rare case of a punctuation mark with a known inventor, a known invention date, and a specific commercial motivation (Speckter ran an ad agency and thought it would help copy read faster).

The Most Recognizable Character With the Strangest Backstory

PILE OF POO (💩, U+1F4A9) is one of the most universally recognized emoji in the entire standard, and its origin is stranger than its current meme status suggests. It comes from early Japanese carrier emoji sets, where it represented more than just its literal meaning — in Japanese, the word for feces (unko) sounds close to a word associated with good luck (unkô), and the character carried some of that positive-superstition association in its original context. What reads internationally today as a pure joke character started as a small piece of Japanese wordplay embedded directly into a mobile phone keyboard.

That block alone is roughly 1,000 characters. Egyptian Hieroglyphs alone is 1,072. Between them they don’t add up to a rounding error against the full 159,801 — which is worth remembering the next time a “fancy text” page implies it’s shown you everything Unicode has to offer. It hasn’t. It’s shown you a sliver deliberately chosen because it happens to look like styled Latin letters.
