C With an Accent (Ç)

C has one common accented form: ç, called “c with a cedilla.” It’s a genuine Unicode character, not a stylized c, and copies and pastes exactly like plain text.

What the Cedilla Actually Does

In French, Portuguese, Turkish, Catalan and a handful of other languages, plain c before a, o, or u is normally pronounced hard, like a k — think of the English word “cat.” The cedilla underneath flips that: ç before a, o, or u is pronounced soft, like an s. That’s the entire job of the mark — it’s a pronunciation instruction, not decoration.

The shape has a real backstory too. “Cedilla” comes from the Spanish “zedilla,” meaning “little z” — medieval scribes originally wrote a small z directly under the c to mark this same soft sound, and that tiny z gradually curled into the hook-shaped mark used today.

Where Ç Confusion Happens

The textbook French example is garçon (boy, or waiter). Without the cedilla, “garcon” would default to a hard c sound — “gar-kon” — but the actual pronunciation is “gar-sohn.” Drop the cedilla in casual typing and most French speakers will still understand the word, but the spelling no longer matches how it’s said.

The same logic explains why façade keeps its cedilla in English even though “facade” without it is now common and accepted — the accented form is the one that visually explains its own pronunciation.

How to Type Ç

  1. On Windows — hold Alt and type 0231 for ç, or 0199 for the capital Ç.
  2. On Mac — press Option+C directly for ç (no second key needed), or Shift+Option+C for Ç.
  3. Fastest option — open the Accent Letters Generator, search “c cedilla,” and click to copy.

FAQ

Is ç just decorative, like a stylized c?
No — it’s a pronunciation marker. It tells you to read the c as a soft s sound rather than the hard k sound c would normally have before a, o, or u.

Is “facade” without the cedilla still correct English?
Yes — it’s now standard and widely accepted. The accented “façade” is more traditional and matches the original French spelling more closely.

Will ç display correctly everywhere?
Yes — it’s a standard Unicode character supported on every modern device, browser and keyboard layout.

Does the Accent Letters Generator include both cases of Ç?
Yes — the Accent Letters Generator includes both ç and Ç, alongside every other commonly accented Latin letter.
