About This Tool

Introduction — What Are Accented Letters?

Accented letters are ordinary Latin letters (a, e, i, o, u, n, c, y) with a diacritical mark added — an acute (é), grave (è), circumflex (ê), umlaut/diaeresis (ë), tilde (ñ), ring (å), or cedilla (ç). They're not decoration: in French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and dozens of other languages, the accent changes pronunciation or meaning entirely. This tool covers every common accented Latin letter, upper and lower case, with the exact code you need to type each one on Windows, Mac, or in HTML.

Why You Can't Just Type These Directly

A US English keyboard has no physical key for é, ñ, or ü. Windows and Mac each have their own workaround — Windows uses numeric Alt codes typed on the numpad, Mac uses Option-key combinations — and neither is obvious unless you already know it. That's the actual problem this tool solves: instead of memorizing or hunting for the right code every time, search or browse here and copy the character directly.

Key Features

  • 27 letters across A, E, I, O, U, N, C and Y — accented forms plus Ø, both upper and lower case
  • Windows Alt code for every character (numpad-entry, works in almost any Windows app)
  • Real Mac Option-key shortcut for every character — not just the Windows code
  • HTML named entity for developers writing markup directly
  • Search by name — type "e acute" or "n tilde" instead of hunting visually
  • One click to copy — no signup, no installation

How to Use This Tool

  1. Step 1 — Find your letter
Search by name (e.g. "u umlaut") or filter by base letter using the A–Y buttons.
  2. Step 2 — Click to copy
Click the large character to copy it straight to your clipboard.
  3. Step 3 — Paste anywhere
Paste into a document, form, chat, or code editor — it's a real Unicode character, not an image.

Windows Alt Codes vs. Mac Shortcuts vs. HTML Entities

Each character card shows all three because they solve different problems. The Alt code (e.g. Alt+0233 for é) works by holding Alt and typing the number on your numeric keypad — it works in almost any Windows application without needing to touch a mouse. The Mac shortcut uses Option plus a mnemonic key: Option+E is the "acute accent" key on macOS, so Option+E then E gives you é, Option+E then A gives you á, and so on for any acute-accented letter. The HTML entity (like é) is for anyone hand-writing HTML who wants a readable, unambiguous way to insert the character in source code.

Where to Use Accented Letters

  • Names and resumes — spelling a name correctly (José, Renée, Zoë) matters
  • Foreign-language writing — French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German all require these regularly
  • Menus and hospitality — café, jalapeño, crème brûlée
  • Code and markup — HTML entities for accented characters in source code

FAQ

What exactly is an "accent mark"?
It's the small mark added above or below a letter — like the acute on é, the tilde on ñ, or the cedilla on ç — that changes pronunciation or, in many languages, the word's actual meaning.

Do you have every letter with accents, or just the common ones?
This tool covers the commonly used Latin letters with accents across major European languages — Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and more — not every diacritic used in every language worldwide.

What's the difference between é and e?
They're different Unicode characters entirely, not just a visual variant. In French and Spanish, the accent often changes pronunciation or even the word's meaning, so é can't be swapped for a plain e without changing the word.

Do Alt codes work on a laptop without a numpad?
Often yes, using a hidden numpad overlay (usually Fn + a block of letter keys like 7,8,9,U,I,O,J,K,L) — the exact keys vary by laptop model. If that doesn't work on your machine, copying the character directly from this tool is the reliable fallback.

Will these accented letters display correctly everywhere?
Yes — these are standard Unicode characters supported by every modern device, browser, and app. There's no special font or plugin required.

Are these the same as the accented letters in the Alt Codes Finder tool?
The Alt Codes Finder covers accented letters as part of a much broader symbol list (currency, punctuation, math symbols). This tool focuses specifically on accented letters and adds Mac shortcuts and both letter cases, which the broader tool doesn't include.

Browse Every Accented Letter

Each letter has its own in-depth page covering pronunciation, common mix-ups, and typing shortcuts: A, E, I, O, U, Ñ, Ç, Y.

Not an accent, but covered here too: Ø With a Line Through It — a separate letter, not a decorated O.
