About This Tool
Introduction — What Is a Ancient Text Generator?
Runes, Greek letters and Old Italic characters carry a weight that modern lettering does not. They are the scripts of Norse inscriptions, classical philosophy and pre-Roman Italy.
This ancient text generator maps your letters onto four historical scripts — Elder Futhark runes, spaced runes, Greek and Old Italic — as real Unicode characters you can copy anywhere.
What These Ancient Scripts Actually Are
Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, used across Germanic Europe from roughly the 2nd to 8th centuries and carved into stone and wood rather than written with ink.
Old Italic covers the alphabets of pre-Roman Italy, including Etruscan — the ancestor of the Latin alphabet we use today.
An important caveat: this is transliteration, not translation. Each Latin letter is mapped to the closest-looking historical character. The result spells your English word in runic shapes; it is not the word an actual Norse speaker would have carved.

The Four Ancient Scripts Explained
Elder Futhark Runes — The oldest runic alphabet. Note that runes have fewer characters than the Latin alphabet, so C, K and Q all map to ᚲ, and V and W both map to ᚹ.
Runes Spaced — The same runes with spacing between each, closer to how inscriptions were often laid out and easier to read.
Greek Style — Latin letters mapped to visually similar Greek characters. A classical look rather than genuine Greek words.
Old Italic — Etruscan-era characters, the ancestor of the Latin alphabet. The most obscure and archaic of the four.
Why Choose This Ancient Text Generator?
- Accurate about its limits — this is transliteration, and we say so plainly instead of calling it a translator
- Four scripts rather than runes alone
- Documents the character collisions — you know upfront that C, K and Q share a rune
- No sign-up or popups
- Private — everything runs in your browser
FAQ
What is an ancient text generator?
It is a tool that maps ordinary Latin letters onto historical scripts such as Elder Futhark runes, Greek and Old Italic, producing real Unicode characters you can copy and paste anywhere.
Does this actually translate my text into Old Norse?
No. It transliterates — each Latin letter is replaced with a similar-looking historical character, so your English word is spelled out in runic shapes. Real translation into Old Norse requires a different vocabulary and grammar entirely.
Why do C, K and Q produce the same rune?
Elder Futhark has 24 characters against the Latin alphabet's 26, and its sound system differs. Several Latin letters therefore share the closest matching rune. This is a genuine limitation of the historical alphabet.
Are these real runes or lookalike symbols?
They are real Unicode runic characters from the dedicated Runic block, not substituted symbols that merely resemble runes.
Is this accurate enough for a tattoo?
Use it to explore shapes, but consult someone who knows the script before committing. Because it transliterates rather than translates, a runic tattoo made this way spells an English word rather than saying something in Old Norse.
Why do some runes show as empty boxes?
A box means the device font lacks that character. Runic support is good on modern phones but patchier on older devices and some desktop browsers.
Is this ancient text generator free?
Yes — unlimited use, no account required, no premium tier.
