About This Tool
Introduction — What Is a Word and Character Counter?
Every platform has an opinion about how long your text is allowed to be — 150 characters for an Instagram bio, 280 for a post on X, 32 for a Discord username. Find out you're over the limit only after you paste, and you're stuck trimming words while the platform silently cuts you off mid-sentence.
This word and character counter counts as you type — characters, characters without spaces, words and sentences — and checks your text against the real limits of six platforms at once, so you know it fits before you copy it anywhere.
What This Tool Actually Checks
Four live counts update on every keystroke: total characters, characters excluding spaces, word count, and sentence count (counted by terminal punctuation — periods, question marks and exclamation points).
Below that, six platform cards compare your current character count against that platform's real limit — Instagram Bio (150), Twitter/X Post (280), TikTok Bio (80), Discord Username (32), Discord About Me (190), and YouTube Description (1000) — with a live bar and a FITS or OVER badge for each.
Key Features
- Four live counts — characters, characters without spaces, words and sentences
- Six platform limits checked at once — Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, Discord (username and about me), YouTube
- Instant feedback — a live bar and FITS/OVER badge per platform, no submit button
- Shows exactly how far over — not just a red badge, the exact number of characters to trim
- No account, no limits
- Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored
How to Use the Word and Character Counter
- Step 1 — Paste or type your text
Drop in a draft bio, caption or post in the box above. - Step 2 — Watch the counts update live
Characters, words and sentences update on every keystroke, no button to click. - Step 3 — Check the platform you're writing for
Scroll to its card and see FITS or OVER, plus exactly how many characters are over if it doesn't fit. - Step 4 — Trim and recheck
Edit your text and the bars update instantly, so you can see the moment it fits.
Where This Comes In Handy
- Instagram and TikTok bios — both have some of the tightest limits on this list (150 and 80 characters)
- Discord usernames — a strict 32-character cap that's easy to blow past with a styled name
- Twitter/X posts — 280 characters sounds like a lot until you're mid-thread
- YouTube descriptions — 1000 characters is generous, but long descriptions still get cut off in search results
- Checking styled text — after generating fancy, cursive or gothic text elsewhere on this site, paste it here to confirm it still fits before you post it
Why Choose This Word and Character Counter?
- Built for social platforms, not documents — most word counters are designed for essays; this one checks the limits people writing bios and posts actually hit
- Six limits at once — no need to look up each platform's rules separately
- Tells you the gap, not just pass/fail — see exactly how many characters to cut
- No sign-up or popups
- Private — counting happens locally in your browser
FAQ
What counts as a "character" here?
Every character you type, including spaces and punctuation. The "No Spaces" figure strips whitespace out if you need that count instead — some platforms (like Discord usernames) count every character, spaces included.
Are these platform limits accurate?
They reflect each platform's standard published limits at the time of writing. Platforms do occasionally change their limits, so treat the FITS/OVER badge as a strong guide rather than a guarantee — always confirm in the app itself for anything critical.
How is the sentence count calculated?
By counting runs of text that end in a period, question mark or exclamation point. Abbreviations and decimal numbers can occasionally throw this off by one, the same limitation every simple sentence counter has.
Can I count text I generated with the other tools on this site?
Yes — that's exactly what this is for. Paste your cursive, gothic, bubble or fancy text here to confirm it still fits your target platform before you post it, since styled Unicode characters count the same as regular ones.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored.
Is this tool free?
Yes — unlimited use, no account, no premium tier.
