About This Tool
Introduction — What Is a Redacted Text Generator?
Redacted text — the black bars over a declassified document — is instantly recognisable. It signals that something was there, and that someone decided you should not see it.
This redacted text generator lets you type a sentence and click individual words to black them out, then download the result as a PNG. Unlike blurring, redaction destroys the information completely.
Why Redaction Beats Blurring
This tool never draws the redacted word and then covers it. It draws a solid rectangle instead of the glyphs, so the original characters never exist in the image data at all.
That distinction is the entire point. Two common approaches leak the text they claim to hide: a CSS overlay leaves the words in the page for anyone who opens developer tools, and a blur can sometimes be computationally reversed. A bar drawn in place of the text leaves nothing to recover — the pixels underneath were never rendered.
Key Features
- Click any word to redact it — precise control, rather than all-or-nothing
- Redact all / clear — one click for the whole line
- Adjustable text size
- PNG download — exported at device pixel ratio for sharp results
- Genuinely destructive — hidden words are never drawn, so they cannot be recovered
- Free, no account, no limits
How to Use the Redacted Text Generator
- Step 1 — Type your text
Enter a sentence in the box above. Each word appears below as a clickable chip. - Step 2 — Click the words to hide
Click any chip to toggle its redaction. Selected words turn dark and are replaced by a bar in the preview. - Step 3 — Adjust the size
Use the size slider to set the text size, which also scales the bars proportionally. - Step 4 — Download the PNG
Click Download PNG. Redacted words were never drawn into the image, so nothing is recoverable from the file.
Where to Use Redacted Text
- Sharing screenshots safely — hide names, emails and account details
- Classified-document memes — the format is instantly readable as "official secret"
- Journalism and case studies — anonymise a quote while keeping its structure
- YouTube thumbnails — a redacted word creates curiosity
- Presentations — reveal information progressively
- Legal and compliance examples — demonstrate redaction without exposing data
- Bug reports — share an error message with identifiers removed
Redaction Modes Explained
Selective — Click individual words to hide them. Best when the sentence structure should stay readable and only names or numbers need removing.
Redact all — Blacks out every word at once, leaving only the shape and rhythm of the sentence.
Clear — Removes all redaction so you can start again.
Size control — Scales the text and the bars together, so proportions stay correct at any size.
Why Choose This Redacted Text Generator?
- Truly destructive redaction — the bar is drawn instead of the text, not over it, so nothing survives in the pixel data
- Word-level control — most redaction tools black out everything or nothing
- Nothing is uploaded — rendering happens entirely in your browser
- Sharp exports — scaled to your device pixel ratio
- No sign-up, no watermark, no limits
FAQ
What is a redacted text generator?
It is a tool that replaces selected words with solid black bars and exports the result as an image, producing the censored look of a declassified document.
Can the redacted words be recovered from the image?
No. The tool draws a solid rectangle in place of the word rather than drawing text and covering it, so the original characters are never present in the image data.
Is redaction safer than blurring?
Yes. Blurring is a reversible transformation and specialist software can sometimes reconstruct short blurred text. A solid bar removes the information entirely, which is why it is the standard for real document redaction.
Can I redact only some words?
Yes — that is the main feature. Every word becomes a clickable chip, and you toggle each one independently.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything is rendered locally in your browser using the canvas API. Nothing is transmitted or stored.
Why does my downloaded PNG look bigger than the preview?
Exports are scaled by your device pixel ratio so they stay sharp on high-density screens. This is intentional.
Is this redacted text generator free?
Yes — unlimited use, no account required, no watermark on exports.
